Lead scoring for B2B: how to prioritize inbound interest
A practical lead scoring model that blends demographic fit and behavioral engagement inside HubSpot CRM.
Lead scoring for B2B: how to prioritize inbound interest
Not every inbound lead deserves the same follow-up. Some are ready to buy. Others are just researching. Lead scoring separates the two so sales focuses on conversations that close.
The best B2B models use two dimensions: fit (who they are) and engagement (what they did).
Fit scoring
Assign points based on how closely the contact matches your ideal customer profile:
- Industry match: +10
- Company size in target range: +10
- Job title with budget authority: +15
- Geography you serve: +5
- Required technology already in stack: +10
Negative scoring matters too. Job titles like "student", "intern" or personal email domains should subtract points.
Engagement scoring
Track behavior that signals buying intent:
- Pricing page view: +15
- Demo request: +25
- Case study download: +10
- Email click in nurture sequence: +5
- Attended webinar: +20
- Unsubscribed: -20
Set thresholds
- 0โ30: Nurture in marketing.
- 31โ60: Pass to inside sales for qualification.
- 61โ90: Priority for account executives.
- 90+: Hot lead, same-day outreach.
Build it in HubSpot
Use HubSpot score properties, one for fit and one for engagement. Create a lifecycle stage workflow that moves contacts to "Sales qualified lead" when the combined score crosses your threshold.
Review monthly
Lead scoring is not a set-and-forget project. Compare scored leads against closed-won deals every month. Remove points from actions that do not predict buying and add points to new high-intent signals.
When scoring is tuned, sales stops chasing noise and marketing stops apologizing for lead quality.
